Franklin Associates, a division of ERG, is making headlines for a new life cycle analysis (LCA) comparing the environmental impacts of reusable plastic containers and corrugated boxes for shipping produce from farms to retail locations. Franklin conducted the LCA on behalf of IFCO, a leading provider of reusable plastic containers worldwide, and Business Wire highlighted the study’s results in a recent press release. After reviewing the entire life cycle of reusable plastic containers and corrugated packaging systems used for delivering North American produce, Franklin concluded that plastic container systems have lower impacts than corrugated boxes in environmental categories that include energy demand, global warming potential, and solid waste generation, among others.
