NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC) invited ERG to write a post for its official blog during Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 15–21, 2016). Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena, so NHC devotes one week a year in advance of the hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) to offering information that will help people prepare. To assist NHC in these efforts, ERG’s Dr. Gina Eosco—a social scientist and risk communication expert—penned a blog post titled “Identifying Trusted Sources for a Hurricane Event.” The post points out that, though there are many sources of information during a hurricane, not all sources are equally credible or trustworthy. Trusted sources display three key characteristics: 1) knowledge and expertise, 2) openness and honesty, and 3) concern and care. To read the blog post, visit NHC’s blog “Inside the Eye.”
